Let your body organize itself


Hi Reader,

A few years ago, while running across Europe, I learned something unexpected from bison and frogs.

During Run for Europe, I spent time with the team at Rewilding Europe in Italy, Romania, Bulgaria, and Croatia. Rewilding Europe is a conservation organization that restores natural ecosystems across Europe by bringing back missing species, repairing landscapes, and letting nature regenerate itself with minimal human control.

In Romania, they studied a landscape for years before reintroducing bison. They looked at the soil, the water, the plants, the insects.. the whole system.

One of the expected effects was surprisingly small.

As the bison moved through the land, their heavy steps pressed into the soil.
Those steps filled with rain.

Tiny puddles.
Hundreds of them.

And those puddles became the perfect place for frogs to lay their eggs.

No one planted ponds.
No one “helped” the frogs.

They simply reintroduced the right actor into the system,
and nature took care of the rest.

That was the lesson they kept repeating:

Humans don’t need to control nature.
They just need to
set the conditions right.

I think about that a lot when it comes to the human body.

We try to fix ourselves with hacks and discipline.
More training. More tracking. More control.

But maybe we’re missing the obvious.

Humans aren’t meant to sit for 9 hours a day.
We aren’t meant to stare at screens until our nervous system is fried.
We aren’t meant to live in climate-controlled boxes and call it normal.

When those conditions are wrong, the body adapts...
quietly, slowly.. until something hurts.

But when the conditions are right, something else happens.

Posture improves without cues.
Breathing deepens without effort.
Strength returns without forcing it.

Just like the frogs.

This is the core idea behind rewilding your body.

Not controlling outcomes.
Not micromanaging movement.

But restoring the inputs the system evolved with,
and letting the body organize itself.

This week’s practice:
Change one condition this week.

Walk more than you sit.
Take the stairs.
Move outside instead of indoors.
